Expert Lecture—“Animal Behaviors · Emotion · Protection” Reached a Successful Conclusion

2019-07-23

The July giant panda lecture activity at the Chengdu Panda Base reached a successful conclusion. The activity was held at Panda Valley, the Dujiangyan Field Research Center for Giant Pandas of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, on July 6, with Doctor Sarah M. Bexell, expert and advisor to the base, giving the lecture.

This month had the theme “animal behaviors · emotion · protection”. Implemented in various forms, such as told through short, funny stories about animal behaviors and emotions, onsite observations of red pandas, practice and exchange and discussions, it allowed the general public to acquire an in-depth insight into unique behaviors and varied emotional expressions of animals and drew public attention to these animals.

In Doctor Sarah M. Bexell’s lecture, onsite personnel were allowed to get a glimpse into the magic world of animals. After hearing funny stories about animals, they knew that “mice also have emotions”; “elephants and gorillas grieve the loss of family members”; “mother bats take care of their babies to a surprising degree”. They went to the red panda activity site, and shared their observations and opinions with others after carefully observing the red pandas.

“Some cares only if they understand and act only if they care”. The hope is that the implementation of such popular science activities will allow more people to understand and care about animals and the natural environment we live in, and encourage them to actively participate in protection activities.
